Much of Europe s traditions technology and institutions come to us from these fierce men of the North. England Germany Russia along with their homeland of Scandinavia all bear the Viking s mark today. Shot on location in Iceland Greenland and Newfoundland this breathtaking IMAX® film joins the Viking warriors explorers and settlers as they set out in search of new lands. The North Atlantic Sagas come to life as we follow Eric the Red and his son Leif Ericsson first to Greenland and then on to North America 500 years before Columbus. State-of-the-art digital graphics dramatically illustrate the unique shipbuilding techniques that were the key to propelling the Vikings across the Atlantic and into history.

Lost Faces of the Bible

The Lost Faces of the Bible, a four-part documentary series, blends myth-busting archaeology with dramatic recreations and forensic investigation. Having been granted unprecedented access to four ancient skulls from the Holy Land, each episode seeks to accurately reconstruct a famous face.

Travelling across the globe, archaeologists and scholars separate fact from myth, while a team of forensic anthropologists and artists put flesh on bone, using both traditional and state-of-the-art methods of facial reconstruction. An engaging narrative develops around each skull as the experts assemble clues to rebuild not only a face, but the life and times of a bygone era.  Stepping into the past viewers will finally come face to face with some of the most legendary characters of the Bible. A theological journey not to be missed, by any measure.

National.Geographic.Inside.The.Second.Coming.HDTV.XviD-DiVERGE

Short Description (by yours truly):

Misleading title. Three men claiming to be Jesus Christ. Whackjobs in short. This episode (like most of the national geographic stuff I post) is simply for educational purposes.

National Geographic's Description:

Meet three men who believe the Second Coming has already occurred and that they walk the Earth as the Messiah. Pastor Apollo Quiboloy, the founder of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ in the Philippines, claims to have built a worldwide following of six million. Sergei Torop, a former Russian traffic policeman, is believed by thousands to be the literal reincarnation of Jesus of Nazareth. Then, David Shayler, a former British MI5 agent and whistle-blower, claims to be the Jesus soul incarnated as man.

National.Geographic.Legend.of.the.Holy.Spear.HDTV.XviD-DiVERGE

Also known as the Spear of Destiny, this pre-eminent Christian relic is believed by some to be the actual spear used to confirm the death of Christ on the cross. Today, it resides in Vienna’s Kunsthistoriches Museum, but the story of its journey to this final resting place is one of power and glory and greed, as history’s most infamous leaders – including Napoleon and Hitler – sought to wield its alleged supernatural power in their bids to conquer the world. Whatever one believes about the Spear, there can be no doubt that the desire to poses this relic has helped to shape the destiny of mankind.

When Christ was crucified 2,000 years ago a Roman guard thrust a spear in his side to see if he was still alive. In that moment a central tenet of Christian faith was realised: Jesus was dead, he was thus able to be resurrected. In that moment the spear that pierced him became a powerful holy relic. What happened to the Spear thereafter is a heady mix of myth, half truth and fact. To confuse matters further, today there are three Spears claiming to be the Holy Spear. Legend of the Holy Spear follows two investigators attempting to discover if any of them could have been present at the crucifixion. Scrutinizing each spear and closely analysing the stories and legends behind them, the film reveals astonishing clues as to their provenance.

Churches: How to read them COMPLETE (BBC Four) [HD]

Presenter Richard Taylor explains how churches were originally simple buildings intended to protect the altar and the most important Christian rite of all, the Eucharist. He visits Britain's finest early medieval churches to untangle the mystery of why the Anglo-Saxons and Normans seem to have been unwilling to shake off their pre-Christian past and to have continued to fill their sacred buildings with mysterious pagan images. An ancient book in an Oxford library helps Richard find an answer.

Note: These are very well seeded. By the time I started them and finished posting this post, I had completed all of them. Get em' while they're hot!

Benedict.Trials.Of.A.Pope.WS.PDTV.XviD-FTP

In Benedict: Trials of a Pope (BBC2), the Catholic journalist (and former Dominican friar) Mark Dowd, investigated the manifold troubles besetting pope Benedict XVI, by all accounts an enigmatic and often contradictory figure. A native of Bavaria, he was conscripted into the Hitler Youth as a child, spent time as a prisoner of war, and was a progressive thinker and a popular university lecturer, who went on to become the doctrinally conservative Cardinal Ratzinger, otherwise known as God's rottweiler.

Dowd makes clear that he was no fan of the idea of the hardline Ratzinger becoming pope five years ago, but he is scrupulously fair when it comes to unpicking complex issues. His central question is not whether the Catholic church is in crisis – it is – but whether it is fair to blame the pope personally.

NOVA: The Bible's Buried Secrets

In this landmark two-hour special, NOVA takes viewers on a fascinating scientific journey that began 3,000 years ago and continues today. The film presents the latest archeological scholarship from the Holy Land to explore the beginnings of modern religion and the origins of the Hebrew Bible, also known as the Old Testament.

This archeological detective story tackles some of the biggest questions in biblical studies: Where did the ancient Israelites come from? Who wrote the Bible, when, and why? How did the worship of one God—the foundation of modern Judaism, Christianity, and Islam—emerge?

"'The Bible's Buried Secrets' is both a scientific detective story and dramatic adventure that digs deeply into the Bible and the history of the ancient Israelites through the archeological artifacts they left behind," said Paula S. Apsell, NOVA Senior Executive Producer.
